The four elements - air, fire, water and earth - are out of control and humans survive by controlling them with technology. Different races have tech affinities to the different elements.
E.g. A Steam Town (like in the movie Steam Boy). Defence from flooding is emergency pressure system to hold off water until civillians can get into safe subterranean network.

He Kindly Stopped for Me
A nameless protagonist is being hunted by Death, but death is blind and random/chaotic. Stalking him for unspecific crimes.
Stalks him through rows of people killing innocent bystanders until he finds him. He's the last person in the row. He refuses to come forward. When he tries to confront/uncover Death it is revealed that he wasn't guilty - he was betrayed by a companion. He can't see Death anymore. Has he been redeemed? Is he dead?

Pantheon
The Gods of the Classical pantheon have convinced the world they don't exist but continue to pull the strings from the background. They have incorporated themselves into monotheistic entities (every mono-theistic religion operates like a company with various Gods as shareholders/directors - e.g. Ares is the director of several war-faring companies, wars b/w religions during hostile takeovers).
Mortals have stolen relics such as Aegis, etc to control the Gods.
Gods make man in their own image --> Heroes, statesmen, philosophers, resemble gods in appearance and traits.
Christian Mortal/immortal God idea - Gods send their representatives down but are also a part of themselves (Jesus).
